We wear engagement rings to show we are already committed to marrying someone and therefore are not free to any other potential mate. This goes way back, to the ancient cultures when rings were used not just to show off wealth but also had a bigger meaning. A ring back then was a binding agreement. So why use the fourth finger this is because the Romans believed this finger has a direct connection to the heart.
